Boeing Commercial Airplanes is looking for an Associate Flight Deck Optics and Lighting Engineer to join the Flight Deck team in Everett, WA. In this role you will be responsible for generating flight deck display and lighting optical requirements, verifying requirement compliance, and ensuring government certification for all commercial models.

We are tasked with ensuring that the today’s designs receive word class support and new and future designs are loved by pilots, advance aviation safety, and improve operational efficiency. The flight decks we design today will be used for decades to come and connect the entire globe.

In Flight Deck, we define the look and feel of the interface for the pilots, responsible for that design from the drawing board to the entry into service of an airplane. We are experts in flight operations, with unique knowledge of how flight crews operate our airplanes, what their needs, tasks, and constraints are, and we work closely with pilots from all over the world to deliver industry leading flight decks.

We integrate the entire display and lighting system on the flight deck.  As a part of this integration, we ensure that the overall display and lighting scheme on the flight deck meets the needs of the pilot, conforms to regulatory agency requirements, and performs to customer expectations. 

Position Responsibilities:                                                     

  • Display and lighting system design, verification, validation, flight testing, and certification, to include
  • All graphical displays on the flight deck Head-up display (HUD)
  • Alpha-numeric and segmented displays
  • Electro-mechanical displays
  • Lighted push button switches
  • Internally illuminated panels
  • Flood lights, map and chart lights, windows, sun visors and shades, and utility lights
  • Flight deck color appearance and dome lights
  • Local area (Puget Sound) Travel
  • Possible Domestic and International travel

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a ?US Person? as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. ?US Person? includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor’s of Science degree or higher from an accredited course of study in an engineering discipline, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • The ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Education or Experience in Electrical Engineering and/or Optics Technology
  • Pilot?s License
  • Experience with computer aided design (such as CATIA, SolidWorks, Siemens NX)
  • Ability to travel

Typical Education and Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 2 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.


This position offers relocation based on candidate eligibility.
